Now in its eleventh year of residency at Newby Hall, Matombo Sculpture with Dudzai Mushawepwere and Matthew Nakhawale will be taking the opportunity to introduce the rich artistic culture of Zimbabwe to a new audience throughout June, July and August.
Dudzai and Matthew who both live and work in Harare with their wives, work with several hundred artists to showcase Zimbabwean sculpture works by renowned and emerging artists. Drawing from many different parts of Zimbabwe, they buy direct from solo artists, small workshops and co-operatives with all money going directly to the artist.
A huge draw of the exhibition is that Matthew and Dudzai are able to give a demonstration of how these wonderful sculptures are created and children get the chance to feel the shape and texture of the sculptures, which is often not possible at other exhibitions. There is also the opportunity to ‘have a go’ at carving under the watchful eye of both Dudzai and Matthew. Tools and stone are available to try and all ages are welcome!
This is a popular exhibition for schools to visit and take part in, so please book early to avoid disappointment
