Autumn Plants for your garden:
Ornamental cabbages
Beloved of the French - and cultivated by them for centuries - the ornamental cabbage is the perfect hardy annual for introducing sculptural form and a splash of vibrant colour to a winter garden.
Heather
The distincyive white, lavender and purple hues of heather create a glorious autumnal display that is as suited to domestic gardens as windswept moors.
Water lilies
The ancient Greeks dedicated these beautiful flowers to the nymphs, hence their latin mane Nymphaea.
Water lilies are admired by many gardener, and from late May onwards they can be enjoyed in a variety of situations ranging from small containers on terraces to ornamental lakes.
Hydrangeas
From rich blue blooms to elegant white lacecaps and bunched purple-russet, mop-heads, hydrangeas are statuesque beauties that change colour as they fade, thriving in gardens.
Acers
Acers come in a variety of sizes, varying from parkland trees to garden-sized shrubs. They are perfect to add colour with their leaves igniting the landscape with spectacular shades of scarlet and crimson.
Sedums
With their large corymbs of tiny star-shaped flowers and succulent, coloured leaves, sedums bring both dramatic shape and rich colour to the garden throughout late summer and autumn. Also known as stonecrop, sedum flowers come in pink, purple, red, yellow and white, and as the season progresses the pink and red ones deepen to bright crimson, firey bronze and copper red. The tall late-flowering species entice late-season butterflies into the garden, while in winter sedum skeletons add striking shapes to the landscape.
