School Visits--

Newby presents endless opportunities for an inspirational educational visit. The ancient sculptures in the Statue Gallery and the modern sculptures on the Contemporary Sculpture Trail (from 1st June) give wonderful scope for discovering the arts. The woodland walk and gardens provide a wealth of material, while the house itself is a very special environment in which to explore form, colour, design and mathematical proportion as well as architecture and social history.
 
Newby's wonderful adventure playground is a fantastic place to let off steam with an amazing variety of experiences including the miniture railway.
 
Eating – There is a large picnic area close to the coach park for lunch and if it is wet, we will endeavour to make undercover space available.
 
Disabled Visitors good facilities and accessibility.  Both motorised & manual wheelchairs available on FREE loan.  You are advised to book them in advance.

April - Historic Gardener

Newby Hall and the Historic Gardener, bringing history to life!
 
A new and unique opportunity to meet and talk to James Barlow, an 18th Century Head Gardener, as he works at Newby Hall.
 
Listen as he tells you the story of his life and career as a gardener and shows you how he tends the garden with 18th century tools and knowledge, explaining how many of the plants in the Gardens at Newby were introduced to England in his liftetime. How did he keep birds off his seeds? What vegeatbles did he grow? Did he succeed in growing the first pineapple in England? And what's his secret for the successful establishment of a tree?
 
Am Session is 10.00-11.45
PM Session is 12.15-2.00
 
£7.70 per child, based on a class of 30 children. (Can be tailored to smaller numbers.)

June, July & September -'Discover Sculptures'
 
Self led Activity where children have the opportunity to explore and discover the fascinating forms and shapes of sculpture!
 
Self led activity where you can take the children around the Contemporary Sculpture Park and look at the forms and variety of sculpture, and then let the children design a sculpture of their own! Activity Sheets Available upon request from April/May.
 
Sculpture is presented in an ever changing setting where students may touch, feel and explore works of art, using their senses, imagination and intellect. 'Discover Sculptures' gives children an opportunity to respond to, and to think about, sculpture in relation to designed landscape. Newby Hall is ideal for teaching and learning about sculpture and a wide range of subjects at all key stages of the National Curriculum and beyond.

September - 'Gateways'
 
Tuesday 16th - Friday 19th September  2008
 
If you could create a gateway to a new world or place what would it look like and where would this gateway lead? Would it be grand, stately and large, and would it be beautifully decorated?
 
A new and unique opportunity for children to design and create a varity of gateways, entrances and windows inspired by the proportions of Newby Hall, and the unique character of the woodland and the Sculpture Park. The children would work with natural materials, such as hazel, willow, fleece, mud and stone.
 
Children will need outdoor clothing
 
Am Session is 10.00-11.45
