The Newby Hall Miniature Railway which runs along the River Ure, is a delightful ride with fantastic views of the gardens. The Royal Scot Steam Locomotive is in action on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Every other day of the season, our gas locomotives run a regular service – and always on time!
The Railway first opened in 1971, originally an end to end line, built by Cromar White. The line, now extended runs parallel to the river in the shape of a dumb-bell loop and operates every day of the season. Locomotives used on the railway are two Severn Lamb Western gas locomotives as well as the Royal Scot steam locomotive.

We are looking for new Railway Volunteers, to assist with the running of this much-loved Newby feature. You don’t need to be a railway or engineering expert, but you will need energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to work as part of a small team. Tasks range from painting railway buildings and weeding the track, to stripping down locomotives and driving the trains. If you can spare a day each week or so, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01423 320406.
