The Railway first opened in 1971, originally an end to end line, built by Cromar White. The line, now extended runs parallel to the river in the shape of a dumb-bell loop and operates every day of the season. Locomotives used on the railway are two Severn Lamb Western gas locomotives as well as the Royal Scot steam locomotive. The journey takes approximately 12 minutes.

The original track was alloy and has been replaced with steel track and reconstituted plastic sleepers. The project was delivered by https://www.cromarwhite.co.uk/ experts in the miniature railway industry. The Royal Scot locomotive has been restored over the last few years with the final works being carried out by the http://www.steamworkshop.co.uk/
