Magical Pixies appear at Newby Hall
Pixies have been appearing at Newby Hall thanks to a wonderfully talented local artist, Jay Stelling. Jay, who studies illustration at the prestigious Leeds College of Art created this exhibition specifically for Newby Hall inspired in part by the beautiful gardens here at Newby. The exhibition is open to view until the end of September in the Grantham Room which is next to the Dollshouse Exhibition and all artwork is available to buy. Jay has also created beautiful dolls full of character to complement her artwork, amongst which are dolls of the Ripon Hornblower and St. Wilfrid! We will be adding more pictures of this magical exhibition shortly, but for more information and pictures, please see below
Hello, I’m Jay!
I am a 21 year-old illustrator from Ripon, North Yorkshire. I’m currently studying a degree in Illustration at Leeds College of Art. Growing up in the small, historic city of Ripon, I found a love for the rural scenery and folk legends of Yorkshire. Entranced by Cicely Mary Barker’s ‘Flower Fairies’ and Jim Henson’s 1986 film ‘Labyrinth’, I’ve been imagining my own mystical lands since childhood. I refuse to leave these charming dreams behind.
I’ve been making art dolls for the last two years using wire armatures, paper mache and found materials and jewellery. I have sold these via Etsy to customers around the globe, including England, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, America and Australia. My work is usually aimed at children and I hope to continue building worlds and telling stories.
